The
Iowa City Community School District is the eighth largest
school district in the state of Iowa and covers 130
square miles in Johnson County. The district serves
the communities of Iowa City, Coralville, Hills, North
Liberty, University Heights, and the surrounding rural
areas. The district has sixteen elementary schools,
two junior high schools and two senior high schools.
The enrollment of the district is approximately 10,600
students in kindergarten through 12th grade with an
average regular education class size of 23 students.
The school district employs over 1,300 people and operates
on a budget of $71 million dollars and is the second
largest employer in the Iowa City area.
The
Iowa City Community School District's Mission Statement
reads as follows:
"The mission of the Iowa City Community School District
is to ensure all students will become responsible, independent
learners capable of making informed decisions in a democratic
society as well as in the dynamic global community;
this is accomplished by challenging each student with
a rigorous and creative curriculum taught by a diverse,
professional, caring staff and enriched through the
resources and the efforts of families and the entire
community."

Regular Board meetings are held at the Central Administration
Office, 509 S. Dubuque Street, Iowa City, on second
and fourth Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m.
Early
dismissal will be scheduled each Thursday at 2:00 for
Elementary and 2:15 for Secondary Schools.
The
Iowa City Community School District Districtwide Parent's
Organization (DPO)
The Districtwide Parent's Organization (DPO) is an autonomous
group, open to all parents in the Iowa City Community
School District. The mission of the DPO is to facilitate
and enhance communication and education throughout the
district and to advocate for students in our community.
Its purposes are to:
1.
Be an independent, decision-making group
2. Represent the parental point of view on various
committees and boards such as, but not limited to, Curriculum
Review, Reconsideration, District Vertical Team and
the Iowa City Community School District Foundation
3. Support and encourage active participation
in each school's parent organization
4. Plan programs that are of mutual interest
to those within the district
5. Provide a forum to share information, discuss
goals and exchange ideas
6. Sponsor events that provide information about
issues that impact education such as, but not limited
to, School Board Candidates Night, public town meetings
and a legislative trip to Des Moines
7. Sponsor district wide programs which promote
safety such as, but not limited to, Block Parents and
the MADD Red Ribbon Campaign
8. Sponsor events that promote excellence in
education such as, but not limited to, the Kate Wickham
Scholarship and Recognition Reception.
