CORALVILLE
In
1866, remains of a coral formation were discovered in an
area west of Iowa City. The coral indicated that the region
was perhaps an ocean 380 million years ago. The city that
grew up around this formation came to be known as Coralville.
One of the Iowa's fastest-growing towns, Coralville has
most recently been characterized for its new housing subdivisions
and commercial development.
In July 1998, the 1.2 million-square-foot, $70 million Coral
Ridge Mall opened. It has quickly become a major regional
shopping destination, drawing nearly 12 million customers
in its first year to a town of 12,000. Before the mall,
there was the Coralville Strip, a section of Highway 6 through
town that is packed with restaurants, shops and bars. Coralville
shares a border with Iowa City, so the downtown Iowa City
nightlife is barely a couple of miles away.
In
recent years, the town has experienced tremendous growth
in residential construction as well. Prices for new homes
range from $95,000 to $450,000. The most popular homes tend
to be those in the range of $120,000 to $150,000. The median
home sale is $109,900. Area students attend the Iowa City
Community School District or private/parochial schools.
Four district schools are in Coralville: Kate Wickham Elementary,
Coralville Central Elementary, Kirkwood Elementary and Northwest
Junior High. Many residents of Coralville are students at
the University of Iowa or Kirkwood Community College.
