FORT DODGE -- Defending Class 2A champion Solon broke one
state softball tournament record and tied another, needing
just 3 1/3 innings to do it, pounding West Lyon 14-0 in
the opening round Monday.
Solon's 14 runs were two more than the old tournament
record, shared by three teams. The Spartans' 16 hits tied
a tournament record.

The Spartans had seven of their hits during the first
inning, taking a 6-0 lead. That was not unexpected, according
to coach John Begley.
"We came down and did a tremendous job in batting practice,"
Begley said. "With the way we were pounding the ball,
I told one of the parents that their outfield was going
to be busy, and they were."
Jenny Schuelke led off with a double down the left-field
line. Kelsey Kidwell moved her up with a sacrifice. Carly
Goolsby brought her home with a double to the gap in left
center. Goolsby scored when West Lyon pitcher Kali Kerkvliet
threw a pitch in the dirt.
Catcher Becky Kippley tried to catch Goolsby at third,
and the throw sailed into left field, allowing the run
to score.
Lindsey Kidwell walked in front of a monster shot from
Quinn Morelock, who cleared the center field bleachers
with her 15th home run of the season. With two down, Sondra
Grover singled, stole second and moved to third on a Kippley
throwing error. Melissa Parsons delivered an RBI single.
Courtney Strang hit an infield single, then Schuelke smacked
an RBI single to make it 6-0.
"Jenny's double started it, and we just never stopped,"
Morelock said. "You can't get much better than that. Last
year, we came down and won 10-0 in our first game. I like
getting in and jumping on someone."
The Spartans got it going again in the third. Parsons
and Strang each hit singles with one out, then were replaced
on the basepaths by Krystal Kopp and Josie Takes, respectively.
Schuelke drove in a run with a groundout. Kelsey Kidwell
drove home another with a perfectly placed bunt single.
Goolsby hit an infield single and Heidi Kidwell came in
to run. Lindsey Kidwell's RBI single left runners at first
and third, and Heidi Kidwell scored on a wild pitch to
make it 10-0.
The game ended in the bottom of the fourth. With one
down, Kerby Kramer drew a walk. Parsons then singled to
center, and Kramer moved up when the ball was misplayed.
Strang then ripped an RBI single up the middle. Schuelke
capped the contest by hammering a home run to straightaway
left field.
"When you have good pitching like that and power hitting
to go with it, it is tough to stop," West Lyon coach Paul
Kippley said. "That is what we aspire to do."
Solon was 16-for-25 at the plate as a team.
Begley said it was a good way to start defense of the
title.
"You would be foolish to say you wouldn't want to come
out and play like we did. We had great pitching, great
defense and great hitting. That's what you are supposed
to do," Begley said. "With our team, we have several girls
who have had outstanding seasons and they like to compete
among themselves. They like to try to outdo each other.
Not in a bad way, but in a fun way."
Schuelke, Goolsby, Parsons and Strang all had three hits
in the game. Schuelke drove in five runs.
Strang improved her pitching record to 37-5, allowing
only one hit, a bunt single. She struck out six and walked
none.
The win set up a rematch with Clear Creek Amana in the
tournament semifinal round Thursday. Solon defeated its
Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference rivals 1-0 and 16-4 during
the regular season.
"They are a very good team and we are going to have to
come out and play to the best of our abilities," Begley
said.
