Jeremy Burk is confident he can stop the coaching carousel
for the Regina wrestling program.
When the Wartburg graduate was selected recently, he
became the fourth new coach at the school in the past
five years.
"We need somebody that is going to be around awhile,"
Regina athletic director Jeff Wallace said. "We needed
some stability in the program."
Burk, who also is teaching at Regina, is excited to take
on the new challenge.
"I want kids to understand I'm here for the long haul,"
Burk said. "This program is very young. We should be able
to move up pretty quick, pretty fast."
The Eagle Grove graduate moved to the area with his wife,
Natalie, a Mid-Prairie graduate. It is Burk's first coaching
job.
"We've got to start all over again from the ground up,"
Burk said. "The kids have had lots of different coaching
styles, and they'll need to get used to me."
Burk wrestled in high school, but continued athletically
at Wartburg only in cross country and track.
"We'll be well conditioned this year," Burk said. "If
my team is tired, you'll be surprised. In order to be
well managed, you have to be well conditioned. We'll start
with that."
Burk takes over for Ryan Devereux, who ran the program
last season.
"I'm not familiar with the Iowa City area yet," Burk
said. "But I know that it's a good area for wrestling."
