Jon Feldick has a hard time believing he's as good a golfer
as Chad McCarty.
Even after ending McCarty's four-year run of Men's City
Amateur titles with a one-hole playoff victory Sunday
at Finkbine Golf Course, Feldick remains in awe.

"He's such a good player, and he's an even better guy.
He's so easy to play with," Feldick said of McCarty. "He's
intimidating, but he's not tough to play with."
Feldick is a West High graduate who will be a sophomore
on the Iowa golf team this fall. McCarty played at West
Branch High School and was a Hawkeye in the mid-'90s.
"I was trying for five (titles), but everything comes
to an end for a reason," McCarty said.
Feldick entered the day with a four-shot lead after rounds
at Saddle-back Ridge and Pleasant Valley golf courses,
but McCarty grabbed a one-stroke lead with a 33 on the
front nine Sunday.
"I hit a couple poor drives," Feldick said. "Other than
that, Chad just turned it on the front nine. Luckily,
I made a couple birdies coming in and he just made one
mistake all tournament. He let me back in. I was just
fortunate enough to capitalize."

The two matched each other hole-for-hole until No. 17,
where Feldick made par and McCarty made his mistake with
a double bogey.
"I just chunked my 8-iron off the tee so bad, and then
I hit a terrible chip," McCarty said.
McCarty thought they were tied through the back nine
when they were matching each other's strokes. His mess
on No. 17 ruined his chances, he thought.
But Feldick bogeyed No. 18. McCarty didn't think it mattered,
but still ended the round with a spectacular curving 20-foot
putt.
"Then I come to find out after the putt on 18 - which
I thought meant nothing - it ended up being all square,"
McCarty said. "It's my own fault, not knowing I was one
up (before 17). That was my own undoing there."
Tied at 209, the two played No. 18 again to determine
the winner. Fel-dick's second shot fell short of the green,
but he still made par. McCarty's 5-foot putt for par rimmed
out.
"I needed to win something," Feldick said. "I haven't
won anything for a while."
"I wish him well," McCarty said. "Coming in, we both
birdied the same holes. It was up and down."
It was Feldick's second try at the Iowa City Golf Association
Men's City Amateur, though he had followed his older brother,
Erik, around the tournament the last four years. Erik
Feldick was a senior on the Iowa golf team this spring,
but was unable to play the tournament due to a pair of
weddings over the weekend.
"Mentally, I was very, very, very tough today, I thought,"
Jon Feldick said. "I was very pleased with my mental game.
My driver wasn't very good, I missed a couple putts and
didn't hit very many good iron shots, but I just did enough
to get it done."
